
Serena (360-409) was a Roman noblewoman who was the wife of Stilicho, the mother of Maria, and the mother-in-law of Emperor Honorius.
Biography[]
Serena was the niece of Emperor Theodosius I and the cousin of Honorius, and, in 384, Theodosius arranged for her to marry the half-Vandal military officer Stilicho, ensuring his loyalty to the Western Roman Empire. Stilicho and Serena had three children, including Maria, who married Honorius and became his empress. In 409, during the Visigoths' siege of Rome, Serena was falsely accused of conspiring with the Goths and was executed.
