Septimius Severus

Septimius Severus (11 April 145-4 February 211) was the Emperor of the Roman Empire from 14 April 193 to 4 February 211, succeeding Didius Julianus and preceding Geta and Caracalla.

Biography[]

Septimius Severus was born on 11 April 145 in Lepcis Magna, Roman Empire (present-day Libya) to Publius Septimius Geta, a man of Libyco-Greek ancestry. He deposed and killed the incumbent emperor Didius Julianus in 193 and took power for himself, defeating Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus in a civil war to consolidate his rule. During his reign, Septimius Severus conquered the Turkish and Syrian kingdom of Osroene, and on 19 February 197 he defeated Albinus at the Battle of Lugdunum, killing Albinus. The same year, he sacked the Parthian Empire capital of Ctesiphon and expanded the eastern frontier to the Tigris River. In 202 he campaigned against Garamantia in Morocco, and he captured their capital of Garama. In 208 he invaded Caledonia (Scotland), but he fell ill and died at Eburacum (York) in 211, and his sons Geta and Caracalla fought over the succession.
