Septimania is a historical region of southern France, referring to the western part of Gallia Narbonensis that was conquered by the Visigoths in 462 AD. Septimania was briefly conquered by the Emirate of Cordoba during the eighth century, but the Franks under Charles Martel later reconquered the region and added it to Francia. It became a march of the Carolingian Empire and West Francia, but it maintained a degree of autonomy until it ceased to exist in the thirteenth century.
