Senusret III (died 1839 BC) was Pharaoh of Egypt from 1878 to 1839 BC, succeeding Senusret II and preceding Amenemhat III.
Biography[]
Senusret was the son of Senusret II and Khenemetneferhedjet I, and he inherited the throne from his father in 1878 BC. Senusret III became the most powerful pharaoh of the Twelfth Dynasty, building a precursor to the Canal of the Pharaohs and building the forts of Buhen, Semna, Shalfak, and Toshka during his invasions of Nubia from 1866 to 1863 BC. His victories against the Nubians prevented further invasions of Egypt from the south, and he also campaigned against the Canaanites, capturing Shechem and Retjenu. In 1859 BC, the recession of the Nile forced Senusret to withdraw from a campaign against Nubia lest his forces be trapped in hostile Nubian territory. He was deified and honored with a cult during his lifetime, and he died in 1839 BC.
