The Seine is a 483-mile-long river located within the Paris Basin of northern France. Named for the Gallo-Roman river goddess Sequana, the Seine flows from Dijon in northeastern France to the English Channel, and 37 bridges in Paris alone span the river. The river flooded in 1910, 1924, 1955, 1982, 1999-2000, 2016, and 2018, and the river was once known as an "open sewer" due to its poor water quality, although the quality had improved by 2009, when Atlantic salmon returned to the river.
