Segesta was a once-quiet fishing village in the Liguria region of northern Italy, located in the Province of Genoa. It was first inhabited by the Ligurians, a tribe of barbarians that lived in the eponymous region of Liguria. The village was conquered by the Roman Republic in 270 BC, and developed into a civilized town. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 453 AD, the settlement became an independent town, and it was later added to the Republic of Genoa in 1133 after the Genoese defeated an attack by the House of Fieschi of Lavagna. Today, it has a population of 18,177 people, and is developing a new town and is now becoming a tourist location.
