Sector Champion was a section of the Argonne Forest which saw heavy fighting between the Entente allies and the Germans during the spring of 1918 as part of the Western Front of World War I.
The battle opened with a large-scale German attack on the first Allied trench; the Allies repelled the attack before launching a counterattack and taking the Fleury First Line. The Germans then fought with tenacity to recapture their lost trench, and they eventually overwhelmed the Allied positions, forcing the Allies to rally their strength and counterattack. When the Allied attack lost momentum, the Entente forces withdrew to their second line of defenses (the assault jumpoff line) and held them against fierce German assaults. During the battle, the Canadian regiment was phased out and replaced by French Army reinforcements, and, after the German attack was repelled, the Allied forces rallied and again attacked the Germans, this time to recover their initial trench. The second Allied attack succeeded in recapturing their trench, and the battle ended in a draw, as both sides had returned to their original fighting positions and had lost considerable numbers of soldieres in the process.
