The Second Spanish Republic was the republican regime that ruled Spain from 14 April 1931 in the Pronunciamiento to the 1 April 1939 final offensive of the Spanish Civil War. Ruled by the Frente Popular from 19 February 1936 to 1 April 1939, the republic was created after King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Prime Minister Miguel Primo de Rivera were overthrown. The republic was opposed initially by Alfonsists and Carlists, and after the leftist Frente Popular took power in 1936, far-right groups such as the Falange party were also opponents of the republic. In the ensuing civil war between the Republicans and the far-right Nationalist Spain, the Republic was defeated by Francisco Franco's fascist armies. Hundreds of thousands of former Republicans were sent to concentration camps, while many Republican leaders were either executed or went into exile into places such as Latin America.
