Scylla was, in Greek mythology, a sea monster which, along with her counterpart Charybdis, inhabited the Strait of Messina between Sicily and Calabria during the Heroic Age. Scylla was originally a beautiful nymph who won the heart of Glaucus, but the enchantress Circe - who harbored an unrequited love for Glaucus - transformed Scylla into a sea monster in revenge. During Odysseus' return voyage from the Trojan War, he and his crew were forced to fight off Scylla and Charybdis, and Scylla snatched six sailors from the deck of Odysseus' ship before the Greeks escaped.
