The Scottish Episcopal Church is the Anglican communion in Scotland, founded in 1711. The church originated as a splinter from the Church of Scotland, which ended its English-enforced episcopal structure in 1690 following the Glorious Revolution. The church was a continuation of the Church of Scotland as intended by King James VI of Scotland, and it partially recognizes the authority of the Church of England, while also having a concurrent claim of independence; it does not recognize the Archbishop of Canterbury's jurisdiction in Scotland, but it does everywhere else. In 2016, it had 31,656 registered members (90,000 total) and 370 priests in 350 congregations, and most of its residents were upper-middle-class or landed aristocrats.
