Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost state of Germany, located on the Jutland peninsula of Northern Europe. The state was conquered from Denmark in the 1864 Second Schleswig War, and it remains a state of Germany.
History[]
Schleswig-Holstein was added to Prussia in 1864 following a successful war with Denmark, with Germany acquiring the German-majority regions of Schleswig and Holstein. Even after the territorial losses in World War I and World War II, Germany maintained the region, and it is the northernmost state of the Federal Republic of Germany. The historically-German port city of Kiel serves as the capital, and Schleswig-Holstein has a population of 2,830,864.
