
Sayfullo Saipov (born 1988) was an Uzbek Islamist who carried out the 2017 New York City attack on 31 October 2017, killing 8 people and injuring 11.
Biography[]
Sayfullo Saipov was born in the Uzbek SSR, Soviet Union in 1988, and he entered the United States on a Diversity Immigrant Visa in 2010. Saipov became a permanent resident, and he lived in Stow, Ohio; Tampa, Florida; and Paterson, New Jersey, working as an Uber driver for six months. On 31 October 2017, motivated by the Islamic State's calls for attacks on civilians in Western countries, Saipov drove a Home Depot pickup truck into a bicycle path on the West Side Highway of Manhattan, New York City, before exiting the vehicle and firing a pellet gun. Saipov shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he left the pickup truck, having crashed into a special education school bus, and he was shot in the abdomen by the NYPD and taken into custody. His rampage left 8 dead and 11 injured. On 13 March 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison.
