Saxony-Anhalt is a landlocked federal state of Germany surrounded by the states of Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Saxony, and Thuringia. Its capital is Magdeburg and its largest city is Halle, and other major cities include Dessau-Rosslau, Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Halberstadt, Stendal, Weissenfels, Bernberg, and Merseburg. The state grew out of the Prussian Province of Saxony and the Free State of Anhalt, and the state was divided between East Germany and West Germany until 1990, when the state was re-established. In 2015, Saxony-Anhalt had a population of 2,245,470 people.
