Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Saxe-Weimar Alliance

The Saxon Alliance was a military alliance treaty signed by the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach on 10 April 1836.

History[]

With the increase in relations between the North German states bordering the Kingdom of Prussia in the early-mid 19th century, many of these states allied with Prussia and also allied each other for mutual defense. The two Ernestine duchies of Saxe-Weimar and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, located near each other and on the border with a large neighbor (the Kingdom of Bavaria, in the Austrian Empire's sphere of influence), decided to enter into a military alliance. This alliance would continue to exist until the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, which would result in the victory of Prussia. Both of these duchies became member states of the North German Confederation, and later complete states of the German Empire in 1871. At that point the alliance no longer applied as both countries were no longer sovereign.
