Duchy Saxe-Weimar-Eisnach was a small German duchy that existed from 1809 to 1920, and was raised to the status of a grand duchy by the Vienna Congress in 1815. It was an absolute monarchy with the National Party of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach being its ruling party, which was reactionary in its views. Other parties with seats in the Landtag included the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democratic Party. As of 1836, the country had a population of 365,000 people (including 92,250 adults), of which about 80% were literate. Out of those, 99% adhered to Protestantism. The Saxon Army (Sachsische Armee) consisted of the 1st Line Infantry Brigade (3,000 men), commanded by General Rupprecht von Fritsch, and upon mobilization that could be expanded with an additional brigade of 3,000 more men. The duchy's capital was the city of Weimar, famous as a center of German culture and later the place where the Weimar Republic was born.
