Saxe Meiningen was a north German duchy that existed from the partition of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha in 1680, until the fall of the German Empire and other monarchies in 1920. As of 1836, the country had a population of 52,000 people, of which 70% were literate. The dominant political party in Saxe-Meiningen was the Conservative Party.
