The Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was a German duchy located in Bavaria and Thuringia in central Germany from 1826 to 1918. The state was ruled by the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and it replaced the state of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld when Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha renamed the new state. The state would become a part of the German Empire in 1871, and it existed until the November Revolution of 1918, when it became a part of the Weimar Republic. In 1836, it had a population of 292,000 people (including 73,000 able-bodied adults), of which all were Protestant. The upper house of its Landtag was dominated by the Conservative Party of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and other parties with seats in parliament were the Liberal Democratic Party and the National Party. The Coburg Landwehr (Coburgische Landwehr) consisted of the 1st Line Infantry Brigade (3,000 men), commanded by General Ludwig von Blomberg.
