Savoy is a region of France located on the Alps borders with Switzerland and Italy, located to the east. The historical region is divided between the three countries, and from 1003 to 1860 the House of Savoy ruled the region, the longest-lasting royal house in Europe. Savoy was ruled as a county and duchy with its capital at Turin (Torino), and it would become a part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Sardinia would unify Italy under its banner in 1860, and France ceded its Savoyard lands to the Italians, and Torino became an Italian city. In 2008, the region had a population of 1,125,119 people.
