Flag of Savannah

Savannah is the oldest city in the US state of Georgia and the capital of Chatham County. The city was settled on 12 February 1733 by British settlers, and it served as the colonial capital of Georgia; it took its name from the Shawnee "Shawano" tribe. Savannah was the southernmost commercial port of the Thirteen Colonies, and it was a prosperous port during the nineteenth century. The city was the target of the Union's 1864 March to the Sea during the American Civil War, and its Confederate garrison surrendered to spare the city from destruction. Today, it is an important Atlantic seaport and industrial center, and it is the fifth-largest city in the state; in 2015, the Savannah metro area had a population of 384,024 people.
