The Sauk, also known as the Fox or Sac, are a tribe of Native Americans from Iowa and Kansas. The Sauk originated along the St. Lawrence River, but they were forced to flee to Michigan by the Iroquois and later to northern Illinois by the gun-equipped Huron. The Sauk moved on to Iowa and Kansas due to an attack by France on 9 September 1730, and the tribe was split when Black Hawk decided to fight the United States in 1832, while Keokuk sided with the US Army. Black Hawk's defeat led to the tribe moving further west to Missouri and then Kansas and Nebraska, and the Sauk would cooperate with the USA in their wars with the Sioux, Comanche, Cheyenne, and other tribes. In 1869, the larger group of Sauk moved into reservations in Oklahoma, and over 6,000 live in Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska.
