Santiago Derqui (21 June 1809-5 November 1867) was President of the Argentine Confederation from 5 March 1860 to 4 November 1861, succeeding Justo Jose de Urquiza and preceding Juan Esteban Pedernera.
Biography[]
Santiago Derqui was born in Cordoba, Argentina on 21 June 1809, and he became a lawyer in 1831 and served as a government minister under the Federalist governments. In 1860, he was chosen as Justo Jose de Urquiza's successor with the goal that the provincial governments against the Buenos Aires-based federal government would end with the election of a provincial to the presidency. Derqui renamed the country to the "Republic of Argentina", but, after the Battle of Pavon, he went into exile in Uruguay and died in Corrientes in 1867.
