Santiago Creel Miranda (born 11 December 1954) was Secretary of the Interior of Mexico from 1 December 2000 to 1 June 2005, succeeding Diodoro Carrasco and preceding Carlos Abascal. He was a member of the National Action Party of Mexico.
Biography[]
Santiago Creel was born in 1954 in Mexico City, Mexico to an influential political family, and he graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the University of Michigan. Creel worked as a lawyer before being appointed Secretary of the Interior by the newly-elected president Vicente Fox in 2000. In 2005, he resigned in order to run for president as the National Action Party of Mexico's candidate, but he lost the primaries to Felipe Calderon. From 2006 to 2012, he served in the Senate, and he again attempted to run for president in 2012, although he once more lost in the primaries. In 2016, he was elected to the Constitutional Assembly of Mexico City.
