Sancia of Naples

Sancia of Naples (1478-1506), also known as Sancha of Aragon, was the Princess of Squillace from 1494 until her death in 1506. She was the illegitimate daughter of King Ferrante I of Naples, and she was married to Pope Alexander VI's son Joffre Borgia as a part of a political alliance. However, she had affairs with his brothers Juan and Cesare Borgia and even the Pope himself.

Biography[]

Sancia Gazzela was the daughter of King Ferrante I of Naples and his mistress Trogia Gazzela, and she was the sister of Alfonso of Aragon. Despite her illegitimacy, she was still a princess of the Kingdom of Naples, and she was betrothed to marry Papal States official Juan Borgia the Younger. Juan refused to marry her due to her illegitimacy, so Joffre Borgia instead married her. When Juan was struck by her beauty, Sancia began an affair with Juan, in addition to his brother Cesare Borgia and their father Rodrigo Borgia (Pope Alexander VI). In 1500 Cesare Borgia had her brother assassinated because he was jealous over his own sister Lucrezia Borgia (with whom he had an incestuous relationship), and she was imprisoned in the Castel Sant'Angelo because she was a political embarrassment. When the pope died in 1503 she returned to Naples without her husband, and she died in 1506, a year before Cesare.
