San Gimignano

San Gimignano is a city located in Tuscany in northern Italy.

History[]

San Gimignano was founded in the 5th century, named for Saint Geminianus, who saved Modena from Attila the Hun by conjuring up a thick fog. The city was under the rule of the Bishopric of Volterra, and was a stopping point for the pilgrimage to Rome. In 1199 it became independent but in 1348 it sought the rule of the Republica Florentina after the plague killed half of the population. It was controlled by the House of Medici and the House of Pazzi, and fell under Medici rule in 1480 after the Pazzi Conspiracy ended.
