
Samuel Sitgreaves (16 March 1764-4 April 1827) was a member of the US House of Representatives (F-PA 4) from 4 March 1795 to 1798, preceding John Chapman and Robert Brown.
Biography[]
Samuel Sitgreaves was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1764, and he became a lawyer in Easton in 1786. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1795 to 1798, presiding over the impeachment of US Senator William Blount before being sent to serve as ambassador to Great Britain in 1798. He became an expert on treason after the Blount affair, and he successfully prosecuted the perpetrators of Fries's Rebellion of 1799-1800. Sitgreaves served as a burgess of Easton from 1804 to 1807, as treasurer of Northampton County from 1816 to 1819, and as President of the Easton Bank from 1815 to his death in 1827.
