Samuel Huntington CT

Samuel Huntington (16 July 1731-5 January 1796) was the Federalist Governor of Connecticut from 11 May 1786 to 5 January 1796, succeeding Matthew Griswold and preceding Oliver Wolcott.

Biography[]

Samuel Huntington was born in Windham, Connecticut (now Scotland, Connecticut) in 1731, and he became a lawyer in Norwich in 1754. He served in the provincial assembly from 1764 to 1774, as a member of the Continental Congress and as its president from 1779 to 1781 (ratifying the Articles of Confederation), and as Governor from 1786 to 1796. He presided over his state's ratification of the US Constitution and the establishment of the state capitol and state house at Hartford, and he died in office in 1796.
