Samuel Goodlove Cosgrove (10 April 1847-28 March 1909) was the Republican Governor of Washington from 27 January to 28 March 1909, succeeding Albert E. Mead and preceding Marion E. Hay.

Biography[]

Samuel Goodlove Cosgrove was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio in 1847, and he served in the 14th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War before teaching school at Woodsfield and Brooklyn in Ohio and becoming a miner in Nevada in 1880, settling in California in 1881, and becoming a farmer in Pomeroy, Washington in 1882. Cosgrove served as president of the Pomeroy school board for eight years and as mayor of the city for five terms, and he went on to serve as Governor in 1909, only to suffer a heart attack and prove too weak to finish his inaugural address. Given a leave of absence, he died in Paso Robles, California while recuperating from his illness.
