Samuel Eccleston

Samuel Eccleston (27 June 1801-22 April 1851) was Archbishop of Baltimore from 19 October 1834 to 22 April 1851, succeeding James Whitfield and preceding Francis Kenrick.

Biography[]

Samuel Eccleston was born near Chestertown, Maryland on 27 June 1801, and he was raised Episcopalian. He converted to Catholicism at the age of 18 and became a priest in 1825. In 1834, he became Coadjutor Bishop of Baltimore, and he succeeded James Whitfield as Archbishop that same year. He encouraged religious orders to establish houses in his diocese, and several new churches were erected during his administration. He died in the Georgetown section of Washington DC in 1851.
