Samuel D. McEnery

Samuel Douglas McEnery (28 May 1837-28 June 1910) was the Democratic Governor of Louisiana from 16 October 1881 to 20 May 1888 (succeeding Louis A. Wiltz and preceding Francis T. Nicholls) and a US Senator from 4 March 1897 to 28 June 1910 (succeeding Newton C. Blanchard and preceding John Thornton).

Biography[]

Samuel Douglas McEnery was born in Monroe, Louisiana in 1837, the brother of John McEnery. He served as a lieutenant in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War before becoming a lawyer in his hometown. He went on to chair Ouachita Parish's Democratic Party, and he served as Lieutenant Governor from 1880 to 1881, Governor from 1881 to 1888, and in the US Senate from 1897 until his death in 1910. McEnery was the last Catholic Governor of Louisiana until Edwin Edwards in 1972, and he was among the most conservative Democrats, supporting corporate political power in his state. He died in 1910.
