Samuel D. Lucas was a Major-General in the Missouri state militia during the 1838 Mormon War. In 1838, with the help of Mormon militia colonel George M. Hinkle, he captured Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and he forced the Mormon garrison of Far West to surrender. Smith escaped from military prison in 1839 and settled in Nauvoo, Illinois, leading to further conflict.
