Samudragupta

Samudragupta (317-380) was Emperor of the Gupta Empire from 335 to 380, succeeding Chandragupta I and preceding Ramagupta.

Biography[]

Samudragupta was born in 317 CE, the son of Emperor Chandragupta I and Kumaradevi. Although he had several older brothers, he was chosen as his father's heir, and he subdued his rival Kacha, an obscure prince. He was known as a poet and musician in addition to a warrior, flaunting the marks of hundreds of wounds in battle that he had gained while conquering his immediate neighbors. His control stretched from kingdoms in Nepal and Punjab in the north to the Pallava dynasty in Kanchipuram in the southeast, and he died in 380 after many years of campaigning.
