Sami Hafez Anan

Sami Hafez Anan (2 February 1948-) was Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces from 2005 to 2012, succeeding Hamdi Weheiba and preceding Sedki Sobhy.

Biography[]

Sami Hafez Anan was born in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt in 1948. He joined the Egyptian Air Defense Forces in 1968 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General, commanding the EADF from 2001 to 2005 before serving as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces from 2005 to 2012. From 2011 to 2012, he served as deputy chairman of Muhammad Tantawi's military junta during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, and he was more amenable to personal ties than the conservative and standoffish Tantawi. His incorruptibility made him a popular general, but, in 2012, he was retired by President Mohamed Morsi and investigated for corruption. In 2014, he formed the Arabism Egypt Party, and he ran for President in 2018, only to be arrested for running for office without the junta's approval; he was released in December 2019.
