Sam Sixkiller

Sam Sixkiller (died 1875) was a Muscogee Indian who lived in the Indian Territory during the Wild West era. He rescued the Black Union Army veteran Bass Reeves from drowning after the American Civil War, taking Reeves in and teaching him the Muscogee language. Reeves left the Muscogee lands after the abolition of slavery in 1865, but he returned in 1875 while he was on his way to hunt down the outlaw Bob Dozier. Dozier and his gang ambushed Sixkiller, Reeves, and their friends as they stayed in Muskogee, and Dozier threw a stick of dynamite into the shack where they were staying. Sixkiller grabbed the dynamite and ran outside, saving the wounded Reeves and the drunken Charlie Storm, and being killed in the ensuing explosion.
