Salem al-Hazmi

Salem al-Hazmi (2 February 1981-11 September 2001) was an al-Qaeda member from Saudi Arabia and one of the hijackers of American Airlines Flight 77. He was the brother of Nawaf al-Hazmi, another hijacker.

Biography[]

Salem al-Hazmi was born on 2 February 1981 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the son of a grocer. Salem had problems with alcohol and petty theft as a teen, and Salem and his brother Nawaf al-Hazmi both headed to Afghanistan to fight the Northern Alliance alongside al-Qaeda during the 1990s. In 1999, he was trained as a terrorist and inducted into al-Qaeda with his brother, and they both decided to take part in the 9/11 suicide mission. On 29 June 2001, he arrived in the United States, and he lived with hijacker Hani Hanjour in Paterson, New Jersey. On 27 August 2001, they purchased flight tickets for American Airlines Flight 77 via Travelocity, and from 2 to 6 September 2001 he worked out at Gold's Gym in Greenbelt, Maryland. On 11 September 2001, al-Hazmi, his brother, Hanjour, and other hijackers boarded Flight 77 at Washington Dulles International Airport. They crashed the plane into the Pentagon slightly half past 9 AM, killing all of them.
