Biography[]
Sajid Javid was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, England in 1969 to a family of Pakistani descent, and he joined the Conservative Party during his university studies. Javid worked in banking for 18 years, and he later entered politics in 2010 as the Tory MP for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire. He served as Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport from 2014 to 2015, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills from 2015 to 2016, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government from 2016 to 2018, Home Secretary from 2018 to 2019, and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2019. Javid was known as a robust right-winger who was dedicated to Thatcherism. Javid was an avid supporter of Brexit while serving in Boris Johnson's cabinet, unveiling a commemorative Brexit coin on 31 January 2020. However, Javid and Johnson experienced a rift due to conflict between the powers of the Treasury and the Government, which came to a head when Johnson fired one of Javid's aides without informing him. On 13 February 2020, he resigned as Chancellor amid a cabinet reshuffle, doing so despite Johnson's intention to keep Javid in that position; he was replaced by Johnson loyalist Rishi Sunak. On 26 June 2021, he replaced Matt Hancock as Health Secretary after Hancock resigned over his violation of COVID-19 restrictions, only to resign in 2022 amid a government crisis that resulted in Johnson's resignation. He stood down in 2024.
