
Saint Martin is an island in the northeast Caribbean, located on the northern half of the island of Saint Martin, which it shares with the Dutch constituent country of Sint Maarten on the south side. The island was divided between the Kingdom of France and the United Provinces in 1648 under the Treaty of Concordia, and the country grew to have a population of 36,824 people in 2009. The island is 190 miles east of Puerto Rico, and it has an area of 34 square miles. Marigot is the capital and largest settlement of the country.
