Safa Giray of Kazan

Safa Giray of Kazan (1510-1549) was Khan of the Kazan Khanate from 1524 to 1531 (succeeding Sahib I Giray and preceding Dzhan-Ali of Kazan), from 1535 to 1546 (succeeding Dzhan-Ali and preceding Shah-Ali), and from 1546 to 1549 (interrupting Shah-Ali's reigns).

Biography[]

Safa Giray was the nephew of Sahib I Giray, Khan of Crimea, and he succeeded his uncle as Khan of Kazan in 1524. His uncle fled from a Russian invasion in 1524, leading to Safa becoming Khan. The Russian siege of Kazan failed, but Safa was forced to flee to Arsk after the Russians burned part of Kazan in 1530, and he was deposed by the pro-Russian Dzhan-Ali in 1531. In 1535, the Kazan nobility deposed Dzhan-Ali, enabling Safa Giray to return to power. He continued the war with Russia, burning the outskirts of Murom in 1537 before withdrawing. In 1546, he was overthrown by rebellious nobles and was replaced by the pro-Russian Shah-Ali. He returned to power for one last time from 1546 to 1549, receiving aid from a Nogai army. He died in 1549, poisoned by his enemies.
