Sadyr Japarov

Sadyr Japarov (6 December 1968-) was Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan from 6 October 2020 to 21 January 2021 (succeeding Kubatbek Boronov and preceding Artem Novikov) and President from 15 October to 14 November 2020 (succeeding Sooronbay Jeenbekov and preceding Talant Mamytov) and from 28 January 2021 (succeeding Mamytov).

Biography[]

Sadyr Japarov was born in Keng-Suu, Kirghiz SSR, Soviet Union in 1968, and he served as a Soviet Army telecommunications commander from 1987 to 1989 before becoming a lawyer in 2006. He was a member of the national conservative Ata-Zhurt party from 2006 to 2010, and then of Mekenchil. During the 2020 Kyrgyzstan protests, Japarov was appointed to succeed Prime Minister Kubatbek Boronov on his resignation. On 15 October 2020, President Sooronbay Jeenbekov resigned, leading to Japarov assuming the presidency in the interim. On 10 January 2021, Japarov - a nationalist compared to Donald Trump (and a man with ties to Thieves in law boss Kamchy Kolbaev - won the presidential vote with 79% of the vote. He supported strong partnerships with Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, despite employing anti-Uzbek rhetoric.
