Sadie Adler (born in 1874) was an American rancher, outlaw, and bounty hunter from Wyola, Montana who rode with the Van der Linde Gang during the 1890s.
Biography[]
Sadie was born in Montana, and she married Jake Adler on 7 September 1896, settling down with him at a ranch near Wyola, Big Horn County, Montana in the Rockies. They shared the work on the ranch and had a happy marriage until May 1899, when the outlaw O'Driscoll Boys murdered Jake and used the ranch as a refuge while fleeing from the Pinkertons. Sadie hid in the basement until Dutch van der Linde, Micah Bell, and Arthur Morgan killed the O'Driscolls and rescued her, although she grew angry that the outlaws were looting her home, leading to a fight which led to a lantern falling and the house catching on fire. Van der Linde calmed Adler down and told her that she would be safe with them, and they took her back to their outlaw camp, where she was taken care of by some female members of the gang. She was initially tasked with cutting vegetables for the gang, and she eventually grew frustrated with her job. She decided to accompany Morgan to Rhodes, Louisiana to run errands with him, and she proved herself while fighting off members of the Louisiana Raiders. She later killed several O'Driscolls when they attacked the gang's bayou hideout at Shady Belle, and she progressively became more involved with the gang's violent activities, later fighting off an attack by Pinkertons. She and Morgan later successfully infiltrated Sisika Penitentiary to rescue John Marston, and Sadie convinced Arthur to help her finish off the last O'Driscolls at Hanging Dog Ranch. She took part in the gang's final robbery, that of a US Army payroll train, but she was captured while attempting to rescue Abigail Marston from Agent Andrew Milton. Abigail shot Milton with Sadie's revolver during Arthur's rescue attempt, and Arthur told the two of them to go back to the camp to be with Jack Marston and Tilly Jackson as he confronted the gang, exchanging a final goodbye with Adler.
In the years after the gang parted ways, Adler became a successful bounty hunter, and, in 1907, she recruited John Marston to help her capture several bounties. She also accompanied him to kill Micah, who had been an informant for the government, but she was stabbed in the chest by one of Micah's gang members and told John to go on without her. Dutch van der Linde and Marston both killed Micah, and Sadie ultimately survived her wounds, attending John and Abigail Marston's wedding. Afterwards, she bade farewell to the Marstons, and she followed her dream of moving to South America by settling in Brazil.
