
Derek Murphy (born 29 December 1968), better known by his stage name of Sadat X, was an American rapper who was best known as a member of the group Brand Nubian.
Biography[]
Derek Murphy was born in The Bronx, New York City, New York in 1968, and he later became a "Five-Percenter" member of the Nation of Islam. He took on the rap name of "Sadat X" in honor of the late Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, who was assassinated in 1981. He was associated with Brand Nubian during the 1990s, and he also became a pillar of the community; in 1996, he partook in the compilation CD, America is Dying Slowly, in order to raise awareness of the AIDS problem among African-American men, and he also worked as an elementary school teacher in New Rochelle, a firefighter, and a children's basketball coach for the New York City Basketball League. Sadat X continued his rap career into the 2000s and 2010s as a solo artist.
