Sadamichi Kajioka (18 May 1891 – 12 September 1944) was a Vice-Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II.

Biography[]

Sadamichi Kajioka was born on 18 May 1891 in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. He graduated from the Imperial Japanese Navy Academy in 1911, and in 1940 he was promoted to Rear-Admiral on the eve of World War II. Kajioka was responsible for the costly victory at the Battle of Wake Island in 1941, as he was overconfident that the bombardment of Wake Island had defeated the United States' garrison; he was given a second try, and in March 1942 he led the invasion of Lae in New Guinea. After the defeat at the May 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea, Kajioka was recalled to Japan, and he was killed in action on 12 September 1944 when his destroyer Shikinami was sunk by USS Growler's torpedoes off Hainan, China.
