The Sabines were an Italian people who lived in the Apennine Mountains of ancient Italy. The Sabines divided into two populations just after the founding of Rome, and the Romans abducted Sabine women to populate the new city, leading to a war which was stopped only when the women threw themselves between the opposing sides. The Sabine king Titus Tatius jointly ruled Rome with Romulus until Tatius' death five years later. In 290 BC, Manius Curius Dentatus conquered the Sabines, who were granted suffrage in 268 BC.
