Flag of Sabah

Sabah is a state of Malaysia located in northern Borneo, with Kota Kinabalu serving as its capital. It borders Sarawak to the southwest and Kalimantan to the south. In 1888, Sabah became a protectorate of Britain as "North Borneo", and it was occupied by Japan for three years during World War II. In 1946, North Borneo became a crown colony, and it was granted self-government on 31 August 1963. On 16 September 1963, Sarawak was one of the founding members of the Federation of Malaysia, and Indonesia's opposition to the federation led to the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation from 1963 to 1966; in addition, the Philippines threatened to annex Sabah, as it was a former part of the Filipino Sultanate of Sulu. In 2017, Sabah had a population of 3,870,000 people.
