The Saarland is a federated state of Germany located in the west of the country, with its capital being Saarbrucken. It is the smallest federal state of Germany (not including the city-states of Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg), and it is known for its coal deposits and large-scale industrial exploitation. Today, it has a population of 990,718 people.
