SEAL Team Six, formally known as the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), is a US Navy special forces group affiliated with JSOC. Founded in November 1980 by Richard Marcinko to fill the need for a full-time counterterrorist unit of the US Navy (given the failure of Operation Eagle Claw), SEAL Team Six and Delta Force are the elite counter-terrorist units of the United States, taking part in the war on terror. SEAL Team Six is most famous for its role in the Battle of Mogadishu during the Somali Civil War (as well as the ensuing war on piracy) and Operation Neptune Spear, the 2011 assassination of Osama bin Laden. The team's operations are classified, and its numbers are also unknown, making it a highly-elite unit of utmost importance to US national security.
