The Swedish Social Democratic Party (SAP) is a social democratic political party in Sweden that was founded on 23 April 1889. The party supported revisionist Marxism, defining itself as either a social democratic or democratic socialist party; it supported social welfare provision paid for by progressive taxation, social corporatism, and anti-discrimination/anti-racism. In 1917, the socialists left the SAP to form the Left Party of Sweden, and few SAP members invoked socialism since Olof Palme's last premiership ended with his 1986 assassination. In 2017, the SAP held 113/349 Riksdag seats, 5/20 European Parliament seats, 572/1,597 county council seats, and 4,364/12,780 municipal council seats.
