The Ryujo was a light aircraft carrier that served in the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1931 to 1942. The ship was built small enough to exploit a loophole in the Washington Naval Treaty, and the ship was employed in operations during the Second Sino-Japanese War. During World War II, the Ryujo provided air support for operations in the Philippines, Malaya, and the Dutch East Indies, taking part in the Second Battle of the Java Sea, the Indian Ocean raid, and the Battle of the Aleutians. On 25 August 1942, the Ryujo was sunk off the Solomon Islands during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons.
