The Russian Air Force (RuAF) is the air force of the Russian Federation, formed on 7 May 1992 after the fall of the Soviet Union, the dissolution of the Soviet Air Force, and the creation of the Russian Ministry of Defense. In 2014, the RuAF had a strength of 148,000 personnel and 3,155 aircraft, and the Russian Air Force showed off its might during the Syrian Civil War, during which it provided air support for the Syrian Arab Republic against the Syrian Opposition and the Islamic State.
