Russia Today (RT), known in Russian as Rossiya Segodnya, is a Russian state-controlled international television network which was founded on 10 December 2005. Founded as a subsidiary RIA Novosti, RT came to operate in five languages: English (2005), Arabic (2007), Spanish (2009), German (2014), and French (2017). RT functioned as a major Putinist propaganda outlet, spreading disinformation and conspiracy theories. In September 2017, the United States Department of Justice had RT America register as a foreign agent due to its engagement in spreading disinformation about the Russian "intervention" in Ukraine. RT was banned in Ukraine in 2014, in Latvia and Lithuania in 2020, and Germany, Poland, and the European Union after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. RT America shut down due to restrictions imposed by the US government, Microsoft removed RT from its app store and de-ranked their search results on Bing, while Apple removed its RT app from all countries except Russia.
