Running Elk (1822-) was a Lakota Sioux chief during the mid-to-late-19th century. Running Elk led a nomadic people who roamed the Great Plains and fought against white encroachment, with Running Elk emerging as a war leader during the Dakota War of 1862 and in the ensuing Plains Indian Wars with the United States government.
